Airports
Several major airports are within driving distance of UCI:
- Orange County/John Wayne Airport (SNA)
Four miles from UCI, SNA is the most convenient airport, but not always the least expensive. Taxi service is the most efficient means to get to campus. This and other transportation options are described on the airport's website: - Rental cars

Fifty miles northwest of UCI, LAX is a major international airport. Regarding ground transportation options www.lawa.org/lax/laxGT.cfm, The most efficient methods of travel from LAX to UCI are rental car or commercial shuttle service. Inexpensive buses run from LAX to SNA, from which a taxi can be taken to UCI. - LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT)
Fifty miles northeast of UCI. Rental cars and shuttles are available. - Long Beach Airport (LGB)
Twenty-four miles northwest of UCI. Rental cars and shuttles are available.
Local Transportation Options
No convenient train or subway serves UCI. Local bus service is less convenient and frequent than in many urban areas. Car rental is recommended unless you are able to stay within walking distance of campus or within a few miles on a bus line.
Housing
Various options for temporary housing exist on or near UCI, most of which require planning well in advance of your trip. Please note that UCI is a large campus and it is a 15-minute walk (or more) from on-campus housing to grocery stores, restaurants, and other services.
- UCI Faculty & Staff Housing Office
Primarily a source for on-campus housing for UCI faculty and staff, but the office will assist researchers and other academic visitors with temporary housing both on and off campus. Contact the office directly to inquire about these options by email or phone at (949) 824-6254. - UCI Housing Office
Primarily for UCI student housing needs, but staff will provide assistance to researchers and other academic visitors. For $15 the Housing Office will provide a customized listing of available housing, both on and off campus. Request a "temporary housing" listing to your specifications by completing the "Personalized Listing Request Form." Indicate type of listing as "temporary housing" and "areas desired" as near UCI campus. Checks are made payable to "UC Regents" and must be drawn from a U.S. bank, a bank with a sister bank in the U.S., or an international check obtained from their local bank. During UCI's summer session (roughly mid-June through mid-September) "Hotel UCI" offers nightly rates for campus apartments. Many of these are reserved as much as two years in advance, so you must plan well ahead. - Apartments and Rooms for Rent
The Orange County Craigslist is a web resource for local classified ads. Look under "housing" to find daily offerings to rent a room, apartment, or other lodging. Avoid listings that don't give the distance to UCI. Read the section on how to avoid scams and fraud. - Local Hotels
Information about a variety of local hotel options and UCI discounts. However, no hotels are within walking distance of the campus. Ask the hotel if they provide a shuttle to UCI.
Wireless Computing
UCI provides wireless Internet access throughout campus, including in the Annis Reading Room. Temporary access to the campus network can be obtained by visitors. More information.
