Using the Southeast Asian Archive

Reference assistance is available in both locations where the Southeast Asian Archive collection is housed—the Southeast Asian Archive Reading Room (Langson Library room 360) and Special Collections and Archives (Langson Library room 525)--during all hours that we are open to the public. You can also contact us for assistance. Visiting researchers from out of town preparing for their visit to UCI are encouraged to contact us prior to traveling to Irvine.

Our research consultation service allows you to work intensively with a reference librarian on research strategy, locating relevant collection materials, and enabling access. Research consultation is by appointment, usually for a 30-minute session. Contact us to make an appointment.

Photocopying of materials in the Southeast Asian Archive Reading Room is done for a fee by staff, who also determine whether materials may be copied.  We reserve the right to refuse a copying order if, in our judgment, fulfillment of the order would violate copyright law, or if size or condition of the material does not permit safe copying. Photocopies larger than 11x17 cannot be made. No more than 20 photocopies may be made from any single published item.

Researchers may also use the scanner in the Southeast Asian Archive Reading Room at no charge for reproducing materials from the Southeast Asian Archive.  There is a limit of 20 scans per single published item. 

Researchers may also take digital photographs of collection materials under some conditions.

All photocopies, photographs or scans must not be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research" according to the copyright law of the United States (Title 17 United States Code). If you wish to use reproduced materials in other ways, you must seek permission to publish or distribute the material.

We offer instruction services for the Southeast Asian Archive.

In addition, the Southeast Asian Archive’s SEAAdoc project brings together core materials for elementary, secondary, and community college students who want to learn more about the immigrants and refugees from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam .  The Southeast Asian Archive librarian is available to consult with teachers on the use of SEAAdoc with their students.

All cataloged books in the Southeast Asian Archive may be borrowed on interlibrary loan.
